Wishing everyone a very happy Asian New Year!
Since I’m usually on the road for the first New Year of the year, I like to get my holiday cards out by the Asian New Year… This is an unusual year in that we’re taking a vacation in February (and will be away not only for the Lunar New Year, but also Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day…)
But, my motto is, where there’s a conference, take a vacation… and since hubby has a conference in Aspen, I’m here, too.
If you are not familiar with the tradition, the Lunar New Year is a huge celebration lasting 15 days (whew! I still have time to get those cards out before it ends!) There’s lots of cleaning beforehand (to sweep out the old) and lots of feasting to welcome in good fortune. And fireworks, and more feasting… you can see why I like this holiday!
Each year is lead by a member of the Asian Zodiac, and this year is the year of the Snake, not the most popular animal in the Zodiac (unlike the Dragon). According to Chinese legends, since snakes shed their skins, snake years are ones of transformation and change. Some are predicting major economic and social upheavals around the world, with some sort of major unrest in May, which is also known as the Snake Month. Still other astrologers say that 2013 will be the year in which misfortunes turn into fortune.
So we shall have to see what this snake year brings…I hope it brings you much health, wealth…and dumplings!
